Biggest Mistakes People Make When Renting a Dumpster

Family Trash roll-off dumpster in the Charleston area

Most people only rent a dumpster a handful of times in their life, so it makes sense that the same few mistakes come up again and again. I've delivered enough bins around Charleston to spot them before they happen. Here are the ones that cost folks the most time and money, and how to sidestep them on your next project.

Guessing the size instead of thinking about the load

The first question I get is "what size do I need," and the honest answer depends less on how much stuff you have and more on what kind of stuff it is. People picture a big pile in the garage and reach for the biggest bin. That's not always the right call.

If you're tearing out a small bathroom or clearing a single room, a smaller bin might be plenty, and it's easier to fit in a tight James Island driveway. A full kitchen remodel or a garage cleanout usually wants the 13-yard or a 17. The mistake is paying for air. A 22 with three feet of debris in the bottom helped nobody.

If you genuinely can't tell, call me and describe the job. I'd rather talk you into the right bin than swap one out later. You can also look over all our dumpster sizes to get a feel for the dimensions before you decide.

Putting heavy material in the wrong bin

This is the big one, and it's the mistake that surprises people most. Concrete, dirt, rock, sod, brick, and roofing shingles are dense. A dumpster looks half empty but it's already at the weight limit a truck can legally and safely haul.

At Family Trash, heavy material only goes in the 7-yard. That's the bin built for it, and clean heavy loads head to the recycle plant. If you load roofing tear-off or a busted patio slab into a 13 or a 22, that bin can't go anywhere. So before you start swinging the sledgehammer, sort your project. Household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, and yard brush go in the bigger sizes. Anything that came out of the ground or off a roof goes in the 7.

Forgetting about access and placement

A dumpster needs a flat, firm spot and a clear path for the truck. People forget that the delivery truck is large, and it needs room to set the bin down and lift it back up. Low branches, narrow gates, soft grass after a Lowcountry rain, parked cars, all of it gets in the way.

Walk the route before delivery day. Know where you want the bin and make sure the truck can reach it. If you're in a downtown Charleston spot with street parking or an HOA, check whether you need to reserve space or notify anyone first. A clear driveway on delivery day saves everybody a headache.

Tossing in things that aren't allowed

Not everything can go in a roll-off, and the rules aren't there to be annoying. Batteries, chemicals, and electronics can't go in the bin. They're handled separately by the county and other drop-off points. When those items end up buried in a load, it slows down the whole disposal process.

If you're not sure about a specific item, take a minute to read what goes in a dumpster before you start loading. It covers the common stuff people ask about. When in doubt, set the item aside and ask.

Waiting until the last minute to book

The other common slip is timing. People line up a contractor, a weekend, and a crew of friends, then go looking for a dumpster two days out. Sometimes that works. Sometimes the size you want is already on another job.

Give yourself a little lead time. Rentals run anywhere from a single day up to 30, and on bigger projects we can swap a full bin for an empty one so you're never stuck waiting. If you tell me the start date when you book, I can plan the drop and the pickup around your schedule instead of the other way around.

Assuming every company covers your area

Charleston is spread out, and not every hauler runs the same map. We deliver across Charleston and the surrounding towns, about a 40-mile reach from James Island. Before you assume a company comes to you, check. You can see the towns we serve to confirm we cover your spot.

If you're outside the usual lines or just not sure, the fastest answer is to ask. We started this company in 2023, we're licensed and insured, and Tony answers the phone seven days a week.

The simple fix for all of it

Almost every mistake on this list comes down to one thing: guessing instead of asking. The right size, the right bin for heavy material, a clear spot for the truck, the right timing. None of it is complicated once you talk it through with someone who does this every day.
