How Long Can You Keep a Dumpster Rental

Family Trash roll-off dumpster in the Charleston area

Most people booking a dumpster for the first time ask the same thing before they ask anything else: how long do I actually get to keep it? With us the answer is a window you pick, anywhere from 1 day to 30 days. That covers almost every job a Charleston homeowner or contractor runs into, from a one-weekend garage cleanout to a kitchen remodel that drags on because the cabinets came in late.

Here's how to think about the time you need so the dumpster is there when you're filling it and gone when you're done.

The standard window: 1 to 30 days

When you call to book, you tell us the rough length of your project and we set the rental for that. A short cleanout might only need a day or two on the ground. A remodel or a slow weekend-by-weekend project might need a couple of weeks. Thirty days is the longest single window, and for most residential work you won't get anywhere near that.

The clock starts when the dumpster hits your driveway, not when you booked. So if you're not going to start loading until the following weekend, tell us, and we'll deliver closer to when you'll actually use it. There's no reason to have it sitting there empty taking up your driveway.

If you're not sure how long you need, lean a little longer rather than shorter. It's easier to call and have us pick it up early than to be halfway through a job with a full dumpster and no time left on the rental.

Big jobs and swap-outs

Some projects make more trash than one dumpster can hold, and some run longer than 30 days. That's where a swap-out comes in. We haul off the full one and drop an empty in the same spot, and you keep working. Roofers, contractors, and anyone doing a whole-house cleanout use this a lot.

If you know going in that you'll fill more than one load, mention it when you book so we can plan the swaps around your schedule. A new container showing up the same day the full one leaves keeps the crew moving instead of standing around.

For a long renovation, you can also just rent again when the first window closes. Either way, give us a heads up before the rental ends so there's no gap.

Picking the right size so time isn't the problem

Half the people who run out of rental time didn't run out of time, they ran out of room. They booked a dumpster that was too small, filled it on day one, and then had to wait for a swap before they could keep going.

A little planning on size fixes that. The 7-yard is the one to use for heavy, dense material like concrete, dirt, brick, sod, and roofing shingles, since those loads get heavy fast and have to go to the recycle plant. For household junk, furniture, old wood, drywall, and yard brush, you'll want one of the bigger boxes like the 13-yard or larger. You can compare all our dumpster sizes side by side to figure out what your job needs.

Getting the size right the first time means you fill it once, on your own schedule, instead of racing the clock.

What you can and can't load matters too

Your rental window doesn't do you much good if half of what you planned to throw out can't actually go in the dumpster. Before you start, it's worth a minute to check what goes in a dumpster. The short version: we can't take batteries, chemicals, or electronics in any size, and heavy material like concrete and dirt only goes in the 7-yard.

Sorting that out before the dumpster shows up saves you from finding a pile of stuff you can't load with one day left on the rental.

Keep the driveway clear when it's time to go

When your window is up, the one thing that helps most is access. If the dumpster's boxed in by cars, a trailer, or a stack of materials, we can't grab it. Leave the path to it open on pickup day and it's a quick in and out.

If you finish early, call and we'll come get it sooner. If you need a few more days, call before the window closes and we'll usually work it out. We're reachable seven days a week and Tony answers his own phone, so you're not leaving a message in a void.

We've been doing this around James Island and the rest of the towns we serve since 2023, and the rental length is one of the easiest parts to get right once you've talked it through.
