Moving Out? How a Roll Off Trash Dumpster Can Simplify Cleanup

Family Trash roll-off dumpster in the Charleston area

Every move comes with a pile of stuff that does not make the truck. The broken patio set, the mattress nobody wants, half a garage of paint cans and old shelving. You think you can fit it all in the back of an SUV and a few trips to the curb, and then moving week hits and you run out of time. A roll-off dumpster sitting in the driveway turns that scramble into something you can actually finish.

Here is how to use one when you are clearing out a house on James Island, downtown, or anywhere around Charleston.

Why a dumpster beats trips to the curb

Charleston trash pickup will take your normal cans, but it will not take a couch, a box spring, or eight contractor bags of garage junk all at once. Bulk pickup rules are limited, and most neighborhoods cap what you can set out. If you are emptying a whole house, you are looking at weeks of staging things by the road and hoping the truck takes them.

A dumpster sits in your driveway for the length of the rental, so you fill it on your own schedule. You load on the evenings and weekends that work for you, and when it is full, we haul it off. Delivery, pickup, and disposal are all part of the rental. For a move, that means you are not making a single dump run yourself.

We rent for anywhere from 1 to 30 days, so you can have the box for the last hard week of packing or keep it through a longer cleanout. On bigger jobs we can swap a full one for an empty one.

Picking the right size for a move

Most household moves are light, bulky stuff. Furniture, mattresses, boxes, closet junk, the contents of a garage or attic. That is exactly what the bigger boxes are built for.

  • The 13-yard handles a single-room cleanout, a garage, or a small apartment move. It is easy to fit in a tight driveway.
  • The 17 and the 22 are the ones to grab for a full house. If you are clearing a three or four bedroom home with a garage and an attic, the 22 keeps you from filling up halfway through.

You can see all our dumpster sizes side by side if you are not sure. When people guess, they almost always guess too small, so if you are torn between two sizes, go up one.

There is one exception worth knowing. The bigger boxes take household goods, furniture, wood, drywall, and yard brush, but no heavy material. If your move includes torn-out tile, concrete, brick, dirt, or roofing, that has to go in the 7-yard, which is the only size built for dense, heavy loads. Most movers never touch that, but if you are doing repairs before you list the house, keep it in mind.

What you can throw in

For a move, the answer is almost everything that is bulky and not hazardous. Old furniture, mattresses, broken appliances, carpet, boxes, clothes, toys, yard waste from the final mow, leftover lumber and shelving from the garage. If you can carry it out the door, it can go in the box.

A few things cannot. We can't take batteries, chemicals, or electronics, so set those aside for proper drop-off. Paint, pool chemicals, old TVs, and computers all need to go somewhere else. If you are unsure about an item, here is what goes in a dumpster, and you can always call or text (843) 800-0689 and ask.

Timing it around the move

The trick with a moving cleanout is sequence. Pack and label the stuff you are keeping first, then deal with what is left. By that point you have a clear pile of junk and the dumpster makes it disappear in a day or two of loading.

A common play is to have the box dropped a few days before the moving truck shows up. You spend that week tossing everything you already decided not to take, so the movers only handle what matters. Then you do a final walkthrough sweep, throw the last odds and ends in, and call for pickup once the house is empty.

If you are a landlord or you bought a place that came with the last owner's leftovers, same idea. Drop the box, fill it, done. We are reachable seven days a week, and Tony answers his own phone, so you can plan delivery around your closing date or your handoff instead of working around us.

Where we deliver

We are based on James Island and cover Charleston plus the towns around it, roughly a 40-mile spread. Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, North Charleston, Summerville, Johns Island, the beaches, and more. Check the towns we serve to confirm your spot is on the list.

Moving is enough work without driving carloads of junk to the dump on top of it. Get the box in the driveway, fill it as you go, and let the leftover house empty itself into it. When you know your dates, call or text (843) 800-0689 and we will line up a drop-off.
