A roll-off truck needs more room than people expect, and the spot that looks fine in your head is sometimes a tight squeeze in real life. Ten minutes of prep the day before delivery saves you a phone call while the driver is sitting in your street. Here's what actually matters when you're getting a dumpster dropped at a Charleston home or job site.
Pick the spot and measure it
The container slides off the back of the truck on rails, so the driver needs a straight, fairly level run to set it down. A standard driveway works for most homes. Plan on roughly 60 feet of clear length and about 11 feet of width for the truck and the container, plus overhead clearance with no low branches or wires in the way.
If your driveway is short or steep, the street is the next best option. Charleston neighborhoods vary a lot here. Some streets are wide and quiet, others are narrow with parking on both sides, and a few neighborhoods or HOAs want a permit for a container in the road. Check that before delivery day so the dumpster doesn't have to move twice.
Think about which way the doors face too. The container has a swing door on one end for walking heavy stuff in instead of lifting it over the wall. Tell us which direction you want that door pointing and we'll set it that way.
Clear the path and the landing spot
On delivery day, move your cars out of the driveway before the truck shows up. The same goes for trailers, boats, basketball hoops, and trash cans sitting at the curb. The driver can't thread around them, and a blocked driveway is the most common reason a drop gets delayed.
Look up as well as down. Spanish moss and live oaks are part of the charm here, but low limbs and sagging utility lines will stop a truck cold. If you've got a branch hanging over the only spot that works, trim it or pick a different landing zone.
Protect your driveway
The container sits on steel, and a loaded roll-off is heavy. On most concrete and asphalt driveways that's no problem for a short rental. If your driveway is older, freshly sealed, or you're just particular about it, lay down a couple of boards or sheets of plywood where the container will rest. We can set it right on top of them. It's a small thing that keeps scuffs and pressure marks off the surface.
Know what's going in before you order
Picking the right size up front saves you from renting twice. The biggest factor in Charleston is whether your debris is heavy. Concrete, dirt, rock, sod, brick, and roofing shingles are dense, and they go in the 7-yard only. That's the one container built for that kind of weight, and clean heavy loads head to the recycle plant.
Household junk, old furniture, wood, drywall, yard brush, and general remodeling debris go in the larger containers like the 13-yard and up. Those don't take heavy material, so don't mix a pile of broken concrete into a furniture load. If you're not sure where your project lands, look at all our dumpster sizes or just call and describe the job.
A few things can't go in any container: batteries, chemicals, and electronics. If you've got a question about a specific item, check what goes in a dumpster before delivery so it doesn't end up in the pile.
Plan the loading and the pickup
Once the container is down, you've got time to fill it. Rentals run 1 to 30 days, so you can knock out a weekend cleanout or stretch it across a longer remodel. On bigger jobs we can swap a full container for an empty one and keep you moving.
When you load, keep everything below the top rail. An overfilled container can't be tarped or hauled safely, so spread heavy items across the floor and break down bulky pieces where you can. If you fill up faster than expected, give us a heads up and we'll sort out a swap or an early pickup.
Talk to us first if anything's tight
If you're looking at the spot and you're not sure the truck will fit, the easiest move is to ask before delivery day. Tony answers the phone, and a two-minute conversation about your driveway, your street, or your gate beats a missed drop. We're based on James Island and cover Charleston and the surrounding area. You can see the towns we serve to confirm you're in range.
