Charleston permits

Do you need a permit for a dumpster in Charleston?

Short answer: almost never. If your dumpster sits on your own driveway or property, there's no permit and nothing to file. You only need one when the dumpster has to go in the street, and even in downtown Charleston that's rare.

When you don't need a permit

Most of our drops go right on the driveway, the yard, or a parking spot on your own property. That's the vast majority of jobs, and none of them need a thing from the city. You call, we drop it, you fill it, we haul it off.

When you do need one

The one time it comes up is when the dumpster has to sit in the street or the public right-of-way inside the City of Charleston. Then the city wants a short-term street permit. It's a small fee, and the city issues it to the property owner or renter, so it's something you pull, not us. In practice this almost never happens. We've only had a couple of jobs over the years that needed one.

Downtown and the historic district

Downtown is tight. Some blocks the houses sit so close you can barely get a car between them. That's where a lot of companies say no. Tony has been doing this in Charleston a long time, and he'll angle it, tuck it, or set it out front to make it work, usually on your property so the street permit question never comes up. If your spot is genuinely a street-only situation, he'll tell you straight and walk you through the permit.

The easy part: just ask

You don't have to figure any of this out on your own. When you book or call, tell us where you're thinking of putting it, and we'll tell you in about ten seconds whether it needs a permit. Nine times out of ten the answer is no, and we drop it wherever works best on your property.
