A yard cleanup goes a lot faster when the dumpster shows up where you actually want it. Most of the headaches we see with yard waste rentals around Charleston aren't about the trash at all. They're about access. A car parked in the wrong spot, a low branch over the driveway, or a soft patch of grass after a week of rain. Spend ten minutes getting your property ready before delivery day and the truck can drop the container clean and level on the first try.
Pick the drop spot before we arrive
The most useful thing you can do is decide ahead of time exactly where the dumpster should sit. Walk the property and look for a flat, firm surface close to where the brush and yard debris are piling up. A driveway is usually the best bet. It's level, it drains, and it holds the weight of a loaded container without sinking.
A roll-off truck needs room to back in and tilt the bed up to set the container down, then do the same in reverse on pickup. That means clear overhead space and a straight shot in. If you've got a gate, a tight side yard, or a parked boat in the way, those are the things to sort out first. When you book, tell us where you're thinking and we'll let you know if the truck can reach it.
For a typical yard cleanup, the 13-yard handles brush, branches, leaves, and general remodel debris with room to spare. If you're only clearing a small flower bed or a weekend of trimming, the 7-yard might be all you need. You can compare all our dumpster sizes if you're not sure which one fits the job.
Clear the path and the overhead
Driveways in older Charleston neighborhoods can be narrow, and live oaks throw branches over them. Before delivery, look up. The truck and raised bed need vertical clearance, so any low limb that scrapes a tall vehicle is going to be a problem. Trim it back or pick a different spot.
At ground level, move anything in the path or near the drop zone. Cars, trailers, trash cans, basketball hoops, garden hoses. Give the driver a clear lane. If you live behind an HOA gate or in a community with a guard, let them know a delivery truck is coming so it isn't turned away at the entrance.
Protect the surface underneath
A roll-off has steel wheels and rails, and a loaded yard waste container gets heavy fast once it's full of wet brush and soil clinging to roots. On a paved driveway that's rarely an issue. If the only good spot is grass or soft ground, know that the wheels can leave marks or sink in after rain.
If you want to protect a driveway from any scuffing, lay down a couple of boards or sheets of plywood where the container's rails will rest. It's optional, but plenty of homeowners do it on a fresh or stamped driveway. On grass, plywood also spreads the weight and keeps the wheels from digging ruts.
Know what counts as yard waste
Yard waste means the green stuff and what comes with it. Branches, brush, leaves, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, palm fronds, and small stumps all go in fine. So does general remodeling and household debris if you're combining a yard cleanup with a garage purge.
Here's the one rule that trips people up. Dirt, sod, rock, and concrete are heavy, dense material, and those can't go in a standard yard waste container. If your project involves pulling up sod or hauling out a load of soil, that's a separate kind of load and needs a different setup. Give us a call and we'll point you to the right size. You can also check what goes in a dumpster for the full list before you start loading.
Load it so pickup goes smooth
Once the container's down, a little discipline keeps things easy. Break long branches down so they lay flat instead of bridging across the top. Keep everything below the rim so the load can be hauled safely. Don't stack debris on the ground around the container expecting it to go in later, because the truck takes what's inside the box.
If you fill up faster than you planned on a bigger cleanup, we can swap the container out and bring an empty one. Just call when you're close.
