How to Rent a Dumpster

Renting a dumpster sounds simple until you're standing in your driveway trying to guess what size you need and where the thing is supposed to go. Most people only do it once every few years, so there's no shame in not knowing the steps. Here's how it actually works when you rent from us in Charleston, start to finish, with the parts people usually trip over.

Figure out what you're throwing away

Before you call anybody, walk the job and look at what's going in the can. The material matters more than the volume, and it's the first question I'm going to ask you.

If you've got heavy, dense stuff like concrete, dirt, rock, sod, brick, or roofing shingles, you need the 7-yard. That's the only size built for weight like that, and clean heavy loads go straight to the recycle plant. Don't put that material in a bigger can. The weight will be a problem and we can't take it.

For everything else, which is most jobs, you're looking at the bigger sizes. Household clutter, old furniture, wood, drywall, yard brush, and remodeling debris all go in the 13-yard or larger. Those cans handle bulk, not weight, so keep the heavy material out of them.

A few things never go in any dumpster: batteries, chemicals, and electronics. If you're not sure about a specific item, check what goes in a dumpster or just ask me when you call.

Pick a size

Once you know your material, size is mostly about how much there is. People tend to underestimate, especially on cleanouts, because trash takes up more room than you'd think once it's loose in a can.

A garage cleanout or a single room remodel usually fits a smaller can fine. A full-house cleanout, a big deck tear-off, or a kitchen and bath remodel running at the same time pushes you toward 17 or 22 yards. If you're between two sizes and the job is messy, go up. It's cheaper than renting twice.

Pick your dates

Rentals run anywhere from one day to thirty. Most folks book a window that covers the messy part of the project with a little buffer, since work always takes longer than the plan.

You don't need to have everything loaded the second the can gets dropped off. Give yourself room. If you're a contractor running a longer job, we can set up swap-outs so you're never sitting around with a full dumpster waiting on a pickup.

Have a spot ready

This is the part people forget, and it's worth thinking about before delivery day. The dumpster needs a flat, solid place to sit where the truck can reach it. A driveway is the most common spot. Some folks use the street if there's room and the town allows it.

Measure the approach if it's tight. Low branches, narrow gates, and soft grass can all cause trouble. A loaded roll-off is heavy, and you don't want it parked on something that can't hold it or on a slope where it might shift. If you're worried about your driveway surface, lay down a couple of boards under the wheels.

Also leave the truck a clear run in and out. We're delivering and picking up, so the path needs to stay open both times.

When you're ready, the booking itself is quick. Call or text and I'll walk you through it. I answer my own phone, seven days a week, so you're not stuck in a phone tree or waiting on a callback.

Tell me your material, your rough size guess, your dates, and where the can's going. I'll tell you if a different size makes more sense for what you're describing. Delivery, pickup, and disposal are all part of the rental, so once it's set, the hauling is handled on our end.

What actually happens after you book

People are usually clearer on the ordering than on what follows, so here is the rest of it.

We deliver on the date you picked and set the container where you asked, door facing the work if you told us which way that is. Most deliveries happen with nobody home. You load on your own schedule, over an afternoon or over two weeks, whatever the rental window you took allows. When you are done, you tell us and we come get it. The load goes to the landfill or, if it is a clean load of heavy material out of the 7-yard, to the recycle plant.

Delivery, pickup, and disposal are all part of the rental, so there is no separate dump run and no scale receipt for you to deal with.

One thing worth understanding up front

A dumpster rental is a container, not a crew. We bring the box and we take it away full. The loading is yours.

That sounds obvious written down, but it is the single most common mismatch we hear about, usually from someone who called a national platform and expected labor to show up. If you want the material carried out of the house for you, that is a different service. What a roll-off gives you instead is time and control: it sits there while you work, and you are not paying anyone by the hour while you decide what to keep.
