Fall Yard Cleanup: Leaves and Limbs Before Winter

Family Trash roll-off dumpster in the Charleston area

Mid-October is the stretch when Charleston yards finally start dropping. The live oaks let go, the crepe myrtles drop their last leaves, and everything you planted back in spring is either done or needs cutting back before the first cold snap. If you've been raking piles to the curb and watching them blow right back across the lawn, a dumpster in the driveway makes the entire job go faster.

Here's how fall cleanup tends to go around here, and which dumpster fits it.

What fall cleanup actually piles up

Leaves are the obvious one, but they're rarely the bulk of it. By mid-October you're also cutting back perennials, pulling spent annuals out of the beds, and trimming limbs that the summer storms loosened up. Add in the dead tomato plants, the brush from hedge trimming, and whatever the wind knocked down, and a single afternoon of yard work fills more bags than you'd guess.

All of that is light and bulky. Leaves and brush take up a lot of room without weighing much. That's exactly the kind of load our bigger dumpsters are built for. For most yards, the 13-yard handles a normal fall cleanup with room to spare. If you've got a big lot, a lot of trees, or you're finally clearing out an overgrown corner you've ignored for a few seasons, step up to the 17-yard.

One thing to keep straight. The 13 and 17 are for the light, bulky stuff: yard brush, leaves, cut-back plants, wood, and regular household and remodeling debris. They don't take heavy, dense material. If your fall project includes pulling up sod, hauling dirt, or tearing out an old brick walkway, that's a different load and a different can. Heavy material goes in the 7-yard only, and clean heavy loads head to the recycle plant.

Why a driveway dumpster beats burning

A lot of folks around here still burn their leaf and limb piles. It's a habit, but it's a headache. Burn bans come and go, the smoke drifts into the neighbor's open windows, and a pile of half-wet leaves smolders for hours without really going anywhere. You also can't burn most of what comes out of a fall cleanup. Treated wood, plastic plant pots, and bagged debris don't belong in a fire.

A dumpster skips all of that. We drop it in your driveway, you load it as you rake, and when you're done we haul it off. Delivery, pickup, and disposal are included, so once the dumpster leaves your driveway you're finished thinking about it. No trips to the dump in the back of your truck, no smoke, no waiting on a burn window that lines up with your weekend.

Load as you go

The nice part about having the dumpster on site is that you're not making piles twice. Rake straight into it. Drag the limbs over and break them down as you cut. Clear one bed, walk the debris to the dumpster, clear the next. By the time you've worked your way around the yard, the cleanup is already loaded and gone, not sitting in a heap by the road waiting for a pickup day that may or may not come.

Rentals run anywhere from 1 to 30 days, so you can knock it out in a weekend or take your time across a couple of weeks if the weather keeps interrupting you. On a bigger property where one dumpster won't cut it, we can swap a full dumpster for an empty one and keep you moving.

What we can't take

A couple of quick limits so nothing slows you down at pickup. We can't take batteries, chemicals, or electronics in any of our dumpsters. So if you're cleaning out the garage along with the yard, set those aside for proper drop-off. Everything else from a normal fall cleanup is fine in the 13 or 17.
